Introduction to the Terminator: Dark Fate Movie Review by Ms. H

Prior to watching the Terminator: Dark Fate movie, I found out the storyline would begin where one of the previous Terminator movies left off.  However, if you are like me, and do not keep up with all of the Terminator movies, you may not recall the specifics in the previous films. The good news is whether or not you saw any of the previous movies will probably not affect your opinion of this film.

Plot of the Terminator: Dark Fate Movie

The plot had sort of a “Back to the Future” or other similar type movies spin since time-travel is involved.  The film features a character from the future who has traveled to the present to try to curtail events that may or may not happen. Particularly a character, Dani played by Natalia Reyes, is targeted by the Terminator for destruction because of events destined to happen in the future. The augmented human, Grace, is here to save her.

Action Scenes in the Terminator: Dark Fate Movie

If you are a fan of action movies, complete with battles, as well as car races and explosions mixed in -- then you may enjoy watching theTerminator: Dark Fate movie.  On the other hand, if you like movies that have a solid storyline that you can follow and make logical conclusions about -- then you may want to pass on the Terminator: Dark Fate movie.

Pros of the Terminator: Dark Fate Movie

Action Scenes in the Terminator: Dark Fate Movie

A plus for the Terminator: Dark Fate film is the myriad of action scenes throughout the movie.  The action scenes are mostly unique without giving the impression that you are watching the same scenes over and over again.

Diversity in the Terminator: Dark Fate Movie

Another plus for the Terminator: Dark Fate movie is the diversity in it. I think the casting staff did a good job of having a wide array of people in the movie. Along those lines, I liked the fact that women had prominent roles in the film, and participated equally in the action scenes.

I also believe Linda Hamilton reprising her role as Sarah Connor in the Terminator: Dark Fate film was a nice touch for the film  Unlike a movie I saw recently, Zombieland: Doubletap, she does not appear as a cameo in the movie near the credits like Bill Murray did -- but has a bona fide part in the Terminator: Dark Fate film.

Cons of the Terminator: Dark Fate Movie

Ambiguous Relationships in the Terminator: Dark Fate Movie

A con of the film is the ambiguous relationship between the Sharon Connor character played by Linda Hamilton and Grace played by Mackenzie Davis. In my opinion, more work should have been done on the dynamics between these characters. For example, in some scenes Grace lashes back at Sharon Connor with harsh, angry words, sometimes feathered with profanity that I had to close my ears to. Conversely in other scenes in the movie, Grace is like a buddy to Sharon Connor.

Violence in the Terminator: Dark Fate Movie

There is quite a bit of violence in the Terminator: Dark Fate movie including use of guns, fighting, hand grenades, explosions, chains etc.  Also similar to cartoons, you just wait a few minutes some of the characters are back as they were before these incidents happened.

As a reminder, this movie is rated R so you must be 17 years or older or accompanied by parents or guardians to watch it. That being said, there were no really gross parts where I had to turn my head away from the screen.

Dialogue in the Terminator: Dark Fate Movie

I would describe the dialogue in the Terminator: Dark Fate movie as “needing work.”  I got the impression the writers were looking for a tagline to leave with the movie, similar to the one that Arnold Swarteznegger made famous during at least one of his previous films which is “I’ll be back.” In this movie Linda Hamilton says words that were similar to these but not with the same impact. Other than that, some of the conversations seemed elementary, contrived and did not flow naturally.

Casting of the Terminator Character in the Terminator: Dark Fate Movie

Most of the actors performed adequately for their roles, except for the actor Gabriel Luna who plays the part of the Terminator.  To me, he seemed ordinary and was not a good fit for the Terminator -- unless the Terminator is some sort of unassuming insurance agent or a non-action oriented type figure.

Assessment of the Terminator: Dark Fate Movie

Unfortunately,  I think the Terminator: Dark Fate movie did not deliver. Specifically, the story was not engrossing, some of the characters were miscast and the dialogue was elementary.  Except for some of the action scenes, this movie to me was barely watchable. To answer the question posed in the title of my movie review -- the Terminator did return but to me, the movie returned in a bad way. On a positive note, I went to the matinee so I did not pay full price to see the Terminator: Dark Fate movie.

Rating of the Terminator: Dark Fate Movie

Based on a rating of 1 star to 5 stars with 5 stars being the highest, I rate the Terminator: Dark Fate movie 1 ½ stars.
